Fechi (フェチ) is a Japanese word that means fetish, although common usage is often a much lighter meaning than you might expect based on the connotations of the English word. For example, it could just mean a general like or preference for something, as in “I have a thing for glasses” (めがねフェチです). We often use this lighter meaning of fetish in English as well, and in fact you might even hear someone say “I have a glasses fetish” with the same meaning as the above example. While fechi can have a stronger “sexual fetish” meaning as well, our intent on fechi.jp is to use it in the lighter sense of the word.
Fechi.jp is a Japanese conversation practice service for intermediate to advanced Japanese learners. To become truly fluent, it is important to practice speaking with as many different people as possible. One way to achieve that goal, while keeping interest and motivation levels high, is to interact and practice conversation with many different types of Japanese people, especially if you have a fechi for them. For example, if you have a “gyaru fechi” you might chat with a gyaru. If you love cosplay, you could chat with someone dressed in a cosplay costume. If you always wanted to go to a hostess club, try chatting with someone all dolled up like a hostess. If you’re more reserved, you might just want to chat with an office worker in a suit or a college student in a yukata. We hope to enable all of this at Fechi.jp by connecting serious Japanese learners with interesting people from all over Japan.
